ECCO Tour expands – 16 tournaments in 6 countries with record high 652.000 € to play for
The ECCO Tour has released the 2013 calendar, which offers a long range of news and surprises. And when the BACKTEE Race To Himmerland ranking in October is made up, a total sum of 652.000 € has been divided amongst the players.
The 2013 calendar on the ECCO Tour has three tournaments at the Home of the ECCO Tour, Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort. The ECCO Tour is ready for the 2013 season and is now presenting a calendar with more tournaments, more countries and more money.
The 11th season on the ECCO Tour is going to be the biggest and have the largest prize fund ever. 16 tournaments in 6 countries and a total prize fund of 652.000 €, is what is waiting ahead for the players onDenmark’s professional golf tour in 2013. That is approximately 200.000 € more than in 2012.
The calendar offers a range of news and surprises both in terms of new venues, tournaments and tournament formats. One of the surprises will be that the calendar does not include a Danish Challenge Tour.
“We and ECCO have had a common interest in offering the players a full calendar stretching from March till October without the long breaks in April and July. So this year we have decided to replace the Challenge Tour with tournaments in April and July and also expand the Danish part of the calendar” , explains the man behind the ECCO Tour Flemming Astrup.
The main sponsor of the tour, ECCO, is satisfied with the decision.
”ECCO has its 50th anniversary in 2013 and that is a good opportunity to rethink the structure of the calendar. The vision of ECCO has been all along that the ECCO Tour should function as a development tour. The expansion with the tournaments in Germany and Finland and our own anniversary tournament in August is in perfect line with the vision”, says Sponsor- and Marketing Manager of ECCO Golf, Jesper Thuen.
For the fourth time the season begins inSpainatLa Manga Clubin March with the Nordic League Winter Series. There will be two tournaments – Mediter Real Estate Masters and ECCO Spanish Open – with a total prize fund of 80.000 €.
After the ”warm up” in the south the ECCO Tour travels to Germany in April, where the great resort of Golf and Country Club Fleesensee is hosting the two tournaments; Sydbank German Masters and ECCO German Masters.
In late April the ECCO Tour returns home to Denmark where FREJA Championship is being played at Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort on the newly opened BACKTEE New Course. This tournament will be the first of three tournaments played on what is rightly called “Home of the ECCO Tour”.
After a four year break Brundtlandbanen in Toftlund is back in the calendar in week 19. The airline company Danish Air Transport (DAT) is in cooperation with Visit Tønder sponsoring the DAT Masters, which will be the last tournament in the “spring swing” of the ECCO Tour. From Brundtland the ECCO Tour travels east to Nivå Golf, which is hosting an ECCO Tour event for the third year in a row. This time the tournament is sponsored by Bravo Tours. Bravo Tours Open has a prize fund of 40.000 € and will be kicking off the summer season.
Samsø Pro-Am Classic – presented by Samsø Færgen is the next tournament, where only the Top40 inthe rankings is participating. The tournament is played as a 54 holes stroke play with the first two rounds being played as Pro-Ams.
One of the brand new things in the 2013 calendar is the Mercedec-Benz Match Play – hosted by Ejner Hessel. For the first time ever match play is a part of the ECCO Tour schedule when they visit Stensballegaard Golf in week 26. The tournament is preceded by two 18 holes stroke play Monday qualifiers on two neighbour courses, where 96 players will qualify for the main tournament. The 96 players together with 32 seeded players make up the total field of 128 players. They will be competing for a total prize fund of 50.000 € .
Another new thing in this year’s calendar is that the ECCO Tour for the first time is going to Finland. Finnish Masters – presented by ECCO has a prize fund of 60.000 €. After Finland the ECCO Tour is revisiting Norway for the Mørk Masters before the last of this year’s innovations is going to take place in Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort in the week 33.
ECCO Tournament of Champions is ECCO’s 50th anniversary tournament. The format for the tournament is that all winners from all of the Scandinavian tours from 2011, 2012 and 2013 together with the leading players on both the BACKTEE Race To Himmerland and the Nordic Golf League ranking will be invited to participate. It will definitely have the absolute top players from both the ECCO Tour and the Nordic Golf League Ranking entering. They will be competing for a total prize fund of 50.000 € in a stroke play of 72 holes without cut.
Sweden is next stop on the tour, where Golf Experten Barsebäck Invitational will be played on Barsebäcks Masters Course. This tournament has a limited field as it is only the top ranked 32 players, which will get an invite.
The final 3 tournaments in the autumn will commence in Kokkedal Golfklub with Willis Masters and Holstebro Golfklub will end the season of regular Nordic Golf League tournaments with Holstebro PGA Championship.
Holstebro PGA Championship is in addition to being the official PGA Championship, also the last chance of qualifying for the two Nordic Golf League finals on the Nordea Tour in week 39 and on the ECCO Tour in week 40. The ECCO Tour final BACKTEE Race To Himmerland is ending the 2013 season with a bang and here the last 70.000 € will be split.
”I am both happy and proud of the calendar, which we today are releasing. It is great to experience the willingness of both golf clubs and our loyal sponsors to help make this happen. I am sure that our players will be happy with the new innovations on the tour and the increase of the total prize fund” saysFlemming Astrup, director of the ECCO Tour.
